LONG-TERM OPTIONS THAT FIT YOUR NEEDS
At Radiant Women’s Center in Pembroke Pines, FL, we offer expert IUD placement and removal services to provide women with a reliable, long-acting, and low-maintenance birth control option. Led by Dr. Sheryl Facey, MD, our team is dedicated to guiding you through the process of choosing the best intrauterine device (IUD) for your individual needs, whether you’re interested in a hormonal IUD like Mirena, Skyla, or Kyleena, or a non-hormonal option like Paragard.

WHAT IS AN IUD?
An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. IUDs are among the most effective forms of birth control, with options lasting anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type. They work by either releasing hormones or using copper to prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg.
TYPES OF IUDs
At Radiant Women’s Center, we provide both hormonal and non-hormonal IUD options:
Hormonal IUDs (Mirena, Skyla, Kyleena): These IUDs release a small amount of progestin, which thickens cervical mucus to block sperm and thin the uterine lining to prevent implantation. Hormonal IUDs can also help reduce heavy periods and menstrual cramps.
Non-Hormonal IUD (Paragard): This copper IUD is hormone-free and prevents pregnancy by creating an environment that is toxic to sperm. It is a great option for those who prefer a non-hormonal method and provides protection for up to 10 years.
IUD PLACEMENT PROCEDURE
IUD placement is a quick, in-office procedure performed by Dr. Sheryl Facey. During the procedure:
1. Consultation: We begin with a comprehensive consultation to discuss your medical history, contraceptive needs, and which IUD is best suited for you.
2. Insertion: The IUD is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. The process takes only a few minutes and may cause mild discomfort or cramping.
3. Follow-Up: A follow-up appointment is scheduled to ensure the IUD is properly positioned and that you are not experiencing any complications.
IUD REMOVAL PROCEDURE
IUD removal is simple and typically performed when the device reaches the end of its effective period, if you decide to switch birth control methods, or if you experience any adverse side effects. During the removal process:
1. Assessment: Dr. Facey will review your symptoms and reasons for removal, ensuring the process is safe and comfortable for you.
2. Removal: The IUD is gently pulled out by grasping the strings, which are left hanging just outside the cervix. The process is quick, and any discomfort is generally brief.
3. New IUD Placement (if desired): If you wish to continue using an IUD, a new device can be placed immediately after removal.
BENEFITS OF IUDs
Highly Effective: IUDs are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
Long-Lasting: Depending on the type, IUDs provide protection for 3-10 years.
Low Maintenance: Once placed, there’s no need to worry about daily or monthly upkeep.
Reversible: IUDs can be removed at any time if you decide to conceive or switch methods.
Non-Hormonal Option Available: For those who prefer to avoid hormones, Paragard offers effective, hormone-free contraception.
